A region of intense and varied earth and spice, the Rhône Valley holds claim to some of the greatest wine villages of France. With granite, sand and chalk in the north, shifting to limestone and pebbles in the south, the opportunity for a great range of sweet and dry, red, white and rosé wines, is only limited by the bounty of grape varieties, and the winemasters who create them. Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault, are blended into some of the most famous red wines of the Rhône, such as the earthy and full-bodied Chateauneuf-du-Papes of Domaine du Caillou, Clos du Mont Olivet, Château Beaucastel, Vieux Télégraphe, Rayas and La Nerthe. Offering great value and taste are the rich and spicy Côtes du Rhônes of Clos du Caillou, Château de Fonsalette and Rayas. Outstanding and classic, are the full-bodied, opulent and fragrant Côte-Rôtie of Domaine Burgaud, Guigal, Clusel-Roch, and Pierre Gaillard. More spicy and peppery is the Côtes du Rhône-Villages Domaine Féraud-Brunel Rasteau, blended from Grenache Noir and Grenache Gris. Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, and Grenache Blanc create the dry and aromatic white wine blends found in such classics as the white Châteauneuf-du-Papes of Domaine Beaurenard “Boisrenard”, Vieux Télélégraphe and du Caillou. The full-bodied and highly graphe and du Caillou. The full-bodied and highly perfumed exotic white wines of Condrieu are the best of the Rhône Valley, and are made with 100% Viognier grapes. Rich, dry and highly alcoholic, the Domaine Clusel-Roch is a cult-status example of a floral and fruit bouquet of peach blossoms, violets and apricot. There is no doubt that the sometimes unexpected and voluptuous style of both the white and red wines of the Rhône, paired with their value and quality, make them a sought-after addition to any cellar. |
